Subtitle Reading Speed and Line Breaks Explained
Characters per second equals caption character count divided by its display duration. Shorter lines can improve layout, but they do not lower reading speed unless wording or timing changes. Check both cue density and phrase boundaries before publishing subtitles.

SceneDub strips markup, normalizes whitespace, and counts spaces and punctuation. The worked example shows a cue's exact calculation. The default threshold is 20 CPS, adjustable from 10 to 40. It is a configurable review aid, not a universal rule. Audience, language, delivery specifications, and available display area all affect editorial decisions.
Fix the cause of a fast cue
A dense cue may need more display time, a carefully condensed line, or a split at a natural speech boundary. Extending its end time can overlap the next speaker or cross a cut, so review picture and sound together. Reducing words can change meaning. The checker reports problems but does not choose a rewrite or automatically move cue boundaries.
Treat line wrapping as a separate pass
The line breaker groups plain words using a character target and one to three lines per block. It does not retain SRT timing and should receive plain text. A long word may exceed the target because the tool avoids splitting it. Review the result for phrases, names, and punctuation before inserting it into your timed subtitle editor. Two neat lines can still be too fast to read.

- Analyze the timed caption file with an appropriate CPS threshold.
- Review flagged cues for duration and wording in an editor.
- Check line wrapping separately, then preview the whole sequence.
